Summer is made for discovering new places, scents, and flavors, especially those that push the boundaries of the familiar and create an experience for all the senses. From freshly baked bread from Krk, through fine dining on Cres, to live fire by the sea in Poreč, Croatia this summer again hides a series of addresses that combine gastronomy with a personal story, creativity, and an atmosphere you won‘t forget. We bring you five newly opened and particularly interesting places along the coast that are worth visiting both for the plates and for the story behind them.
Fogo, Poreč
Fogo by Bekal, a new restaurant created in collaboration between the hotel chain Valamar and chefs Tvrtko Šakota and Marko Turković, opened in May. Just like the Zagreb Bekal, the Poreč location also emphasizes cooking on an open fire, and the restaurant itself is conceived as a day and evening gathering place by the sea, with a relaxed atmosphere.
However, the food itself and the concept of dishes offered here are significantly different from what guests are used to in the original Bekal. In Poreč, during the day, reinterpretations of dishes such as pizza, pasta, and grill are offered, but with, as they say, an Istrian twist, made from ingredients specific to Istrian cuisine, such as boškarin and truffles. In the evening, the emphasis is placed on the open fire and the entire menu will be inspired by grilled dishes, which we wrote about earlier.
Twin Figs, Rovinj
In the very center of Rovinj, another interesting place opened this year - Twin Figs, a spot that combines morning brunch, evening cocktails, and cultural events into a unique experience.
In the morning hours, Twin Figs is the ideal address for breakfast. The menu includes homemade cakes with a modern twist, imaginative sandwiches, specialty coffee, fresh juices, and iced teas. The emphasis is on fresh and seasonal ingredients.
In the evening hours, the focus shifts to cocktails and wines, and there are more than 15 signature cocktails on offer, each with its own name and story. Read more about Twin Figs here.
The Moise, Cres
The newly opened Cres hotel The Isolano brings the first fine dining restaurant in the history of the island - The Moise. Whether you opt for Cres lamb and lamb liver, prawns, octopus, scampi, squid, hake, sheep‘s milk and ricotta, wild asparagus, olive and olive oil, and sage honey, with every bite you will embark on a gastronomic journey and get to know Cres more deeply.
The flavors are those that islanders remember from childhood, but most importantly, local Cres people are included in the whole story, supplying the restaurant with local ingredients. Read the big report on the Cres team here.
Wala, Čiovo
In the heart of the peaceful Tatinja bay, in the place Okrug Gornji on the island of Čiovo, Wala, a restaurant and lounge, has opened. Wala was created for relaxed afternoons and long evenings with wine, cocktails, and sunsets. The menu is inspired by Mediterranean flavors but brings a contemporary twist, fresh local ingredients, and imaginative combinations. Read more here.
Pier Bakery, Krk
On the island of Krk, to the delight of locals and tourists, the first true artisan bakery has opened, bringing with it the scents and flavors that were previously missing from the island‘s gastronomic scene.
The bread selection includes classics such as wheat and baguette, but also more imaginative variants such as corn bread, buckwheat bread with walnuts and carob, and soft milk bread with fermented buttermilk. We recently tried their milk bread, which is excellent and ideal for sandwiches and frying, and their pastries, especially the juicy lemon cake, are among the best you can find in local bakeries.
