A stroll down Teslina, Zagreb‘s popular gastronomic street, revealed an interesting novelty next to the Nomu restaurant a few days ago – intensive preparations for a new venue were underway. And as of Monday, it became official: it is the Zagreb franchise of the popular Sarajevo patisserie Mrvica Café & Pâtisserie - Zagreb.
Mrvica patisserie, which first opened its doors in 2015 in Sarajevo and today successfully operates at two locations there, quickly gained a reputation as a place to taste excellent cakes – both traditional and modern. The owner, Dina Ramić Husomanović, revealed to us that from the very beginning she was inspired by French patisseries and top world pastry houses, with the aim of combining the rich Bosnian-Herzegovinian pastry heritage with the best international creations.
Mrvica is not entirely unknown to the Zagreb public; their stall at Advent in 2019 delighted many with sweet bites. Those positive impressions, as well as the fact that, as Ramić Husomanović tells us, rarely does anyone visit Sarajevo without stopping by Mrvica, inspired the idea of opening a permanent location in Zagreb. That idea, whose realization took several years, has now become a reality in Teslina Street.
Behind it all stands a serious production in Sarajevo, where Mrvica has its own Basna farm and a large facility that now employs 140 people. It is particularly interesting that they make all the desserts themselves, without any artificial additives. They even grow their own strawberries and have an apiary for honey production. On the Basna farm, she tells us, "in the most natural way possible and without the use of pesticides, they grow their own fruits and vegetables." Although these homemade, “house” products like honey and jam are not yet available in the Zagreb patisserie, Ramić Husomanović points out that she is listening to audience feedback and hopes to open a second, larger shop where that would be possible.
As for the offer in Zagreb, it is very diverse. Thus, in the Zagreb Mrvica you can find numerous cakes, bakery products, as well as some savory dishes and breakfasts. The menu offers a combination of cold and hot drinks, traditional and modern cakes, tortes, ice cream, as well as fine salads, sandwiches, and pastries. So, at Mrvica, they also think of those who prefer savory bites, offering breakfasts and salads. The space in Teslina is smaller than the Sarajevo locations, so the offer is somewhat more modest, but here too the emphasis is on local, organic ingredients.
Of the authentic cakes we tried ourselves, it‘s worth highlighting mrvica tatli – an interesting combination of Bosnian hurmašica, kadaif, and baked apple – as well as classic baklava and Sarajevo ružice. Alongside them, there are also world classics such as British Banoffee pie, French Mille Feuille, and many others.
But what will surely attract many, and for which they are perhaps best known, is their San Sebastian Basque cheesecake, which we ourselves could not resist. Extremely soft and creamy, it is served with two sauce options – chocolate and pistachio – which come separately, so guests can add them as they wish. This cheesecake is truly airy and rich in flavor. Cake prices range from 4 to 7.50 EUR, which is the price for the San Sebastian with topping.
In just a few days since opening, even during our visit in rainy weather, Mrvica was packed. Judging by the comments from people at neighboring tables, impressions are extremely positive. However, as Ramić Husomanović revealed to us, they do not plan to stop at just the patisserie in Zagreb. Namely, just as they are known in Bosnia and Herzegovina for their catering services, they plan to offer the same in Zagreb.
Finally, let us say that Mrvica currently offers some cakes that cannot be tasted anywhere else in Zagreb, and we believe that their San Sebastian Cheesecake could become a real hit. The same goes for their authentic, original Bosnian-Herzegovinian tortes.
The terrace is small, but pleasant, just like the patisserie‘s indoor space. It is located, as we mentioned, next to the Nomu sushi restaurant, at Ulica Nikole Tesle 14. We warmly recommend you visit them, not only because of the offer, but also because of that special warmth that you will surely feel.
