From Saturday, June 28 to August 31, alongside the new permanent display, visitors to the Museum of Broken Relationships will be able to view the exhibition of Krunoslav Stipešević “Das Gemaelde in der Wand” (The Painting in the Wall). This exhibition is the first in a series of the new program cycle Goodbye/Auf Wiedersehn, curated by Tihomir Milovac. It is a cycle of solo exhibitions in small format by artists who, for various reasons, have left their home country and continued to work while migrating through different environments. Although we can talk about the emotional, physical, and intellectual state of rupture, that is, the status of displacement from one‘s native living space, cultural and family circle, these are artists whose work still retains a real as well as symbolic connection with their homeland, with people, with political and other circumstances, but with changed intensity and motives. This is also significantly reflected in their artistic strategies and specifically in their works.
Krunoslav Stipešević has lived and worked in Dusseldorf since 1988, when, after graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Sarajevo in 1985 and a short period spent in his hometown Osijek, he went for specialization under the renowned German artist Klaus Rinke. The temporary departure soon turned into a permanent stay, with only sporadic contacts with the Croatian art scene. The break with the environment in which he artistically matured, the abandonment of the physical space of his role models, especially artists from the now-famous Gorgona group—primarily Julije Knifer, Josip Vaništa, and Marijan Jevšovar—became part of the author‘s German artistic everyday life. And when we add to that the cases and circumstances where some of his early paintings in Croatia, even after exhibitions in Croatian museums and galleries, disappeared, were destroyed, or were appropriated by museums without permission, that emotional rift influenced the author‘s artistic concept in a series of later works. The exhibition at the Museum of Broken Relationships Das Gemaelde in der Wand (The Painting in the Wall) brings together just such works and, as a whole, emphasizes the transition of the author‘s emotional states through different media.
The new exhibition program in the (inter)space of the Museum of Broken Relationships thus builds on the mission of collecting, preserving, and exhibiting personal items and testimonies that deal with the theme of the breaking of human relationships, whether romantic, friendly, business, or political. In accordance with the museum‘s theme, and at the wish of the first guest artist, instead of the usual opening, we will launch and announce the entire Goodbye/Auf Wiedersehn cycle at the closing of the first exhibition, in the presence of the artist Krunoslav Stipešević.
The exhibition Das Gemaelde in der Wand (The Painting in the Wall) can be viewed from June 28 to August 31, 2025.
