The Museum of Travel brings an innovative concept that combines education, entertainment, and the latest technology. Through a range of multimedia tools – from photographs and videos to interactive screens, holograms, and virtual and augmented reality – visitors enter worlds that bring to life natural phenomena such as deserts, rainforests, or volcanoes. They can walk through world cities, explore the history of human movement, or even experience a flight into space. The impression is complete because the museum offers not only visual but also multisensory content: through scent and sound installations, it is possible to feel the spirit of Croatia, its UNESCO heritage, gastronomy, and sports achievements.
The concept covers the entire development of travel – from the prehistoric man Ötzi and ancient trade routes, through pilgrimages and the Grand Tour of European aristocracy, to modern migrations and contemporary backpackers. In this way, visitors are given an overview of how needs, curiosity, and the passion for discovery have shaped human history.
A special part called Open Travel is dedicated to memories. Every traveler can donate a personal item, photograph, postcard, or recording, thus creating a collective treasury of memories. Selected exhibits become part of the permanent collection, and their donors also participate in the museum‘s prize programs. In this way, the Museum of Travel is not just a place of presentation, but a living collection of stories from around the world.
The grand opening was held in the presence of numerous guests, among whom was the director of the Zagreb Tourist Board Martina Bienenfeld. She emphasized the importance of cultural tourism, highlighting that it drives a large part of global travel and generates significantly higher spending than classic tourism models. She also reminded of the Museums, maybe platform, which this new museum has also joined.
A special guest at the opening was the well-known promoter of Croatian culture and tourism, blogger and founder of the Total Croatia News portal, Paul Bradbury, who on this occasion stated: “Zagreb is neither too small nor too big, and I like that it is the only tourist destination in Croatia that has seamlessly integrated tourism into everyday life. This is one of the most exciting and diverse cities when it comes to museums, and I especially liked the Museum of Travel because it does not deal with the past but looks to the future. At one moment, you are at Plitvice in the middle of winter, and in the next, you are at the Venetian carnival.”
