Mali Lošinj is a town in Kvarner, located on the southern side of the island of Lošinj, the seventh largest island in the Adriatic. Due to its mild Mediterranean climate and as many as 1018 plant species found there, it is also known as a climatic paradise.
One of the most beautiful bays on the island of Lošinj is certainly Čikat Bay. This gem of the Adriatic was completely neglected until the end of the 19th century, and it was only through the efforts of the famous Lošinj naturalist Ambroz Haračić in 1886 that its afforestation began. During this period, many Austro-Hungarian nobles discovered Lošinj and all its beauty, and gradually magnificent villas began to be built in Čikat bay.
Čikat was declared a Forest Park in 1992, whose century-old canopies hide numerous walking trails, among the most popular of which is the one along the coast that passes by luxury hotels and famous villas of Austrian nobility that have been converted into hotels and residences.
Among them, the second villa built, Villa Karolina, stands out for its beauty, designed in 1989 on behalf of Josef F. Lovasy from Budapest by Viennese architect K. von Wiedenfeld. The villa is decorated in a magnificent Art Nouveau style, and its garden also attracts attention.
It is said that Austrian emperor Franz Joseph I spent his days at Villa Karolina with his lover – the famous Viennese actress Katharina Schratt. Many called her the uncrowned empress of the monarchy.
Despite the luxury, the richness of architecture and history, what is more popular today than the villa itself are the stairs located below its garden.
The stairs have become a real hit on Instagram and one of the must-see attractions of Lošinj.
