The preservation of the authenticity of Sovsko Lake and the habitats of plant and animal species through the construction of infrastructure that enables educational content, recreation, and sustainable use of protected areas, with an emphasis on the long-term improvement of environmental, economic, and social values for the local community, has been achieved with the project "Educational Trail" in the protected landscape of Sovsko Lake.
The project was submitted within the category Contribution to the Local and Regional Community by the regional coordinator PANORA - Development Agency of the Požega-Slavonia County. It was implemented from the end of 2021 to the end of 2023 in the area of Čaglin.
The project leader was the Public Institution for the Management of Protected Areas of Požega-Slavonia County. The total value of the project was 117,025 euros, the amount of non-refundable funds paid was 98,739 euros, and own funds amounted to 18,286 euros.
The constructed educational trail is 566 meters long, built mostly along the perimeter of Sovsko Lake, with five access ramps for safe entry and exit, and two rest areas equipped with wooden benches and tables. Four educational panels have been installed along the trail, informing visitors about the natural wealth of the site: flora, fauna, forests, grasslands, and aquatic ecosystems. In addition to the construction of the trail itself, the project achieved multiple results: it improved natural, educational, and recreational infrastructure, contributed to habitat preservation, raised the level of ecological awareness, and enriched the tourist offer in the area of the Municipality of Čaglin and Požega-Slavonia County, thus bringing long-term benefits to the local community and nature protection.
Sovsko Lake was declared a significant landscape in 1989, its area is 68.5 ha and it is part of the NATURA 2000 ecological network. Sovsko Lake is considered an important site because it is a wetland habitat of great biodiversity, which are increasingly rare in the world, including in Croatia.
The project was implemented with minimal interventions in the environment.
The implementation of the project enabled higher quality implementation of the "Young Nature Guardians" program, as part of students‘ field classes, creating new generations of environmentally conscious nature protectors.
