Little is needed for happiness, sings Doris Dragović. Although many would not agree with this somewhat unreal sentence of hers, we will use it this time for poetic reasons, to simply describe the beautiful house on Lošinj we recently visited. Stone House Trasorka, or Kamena kuća Trasorka, covers only 40 square meters, but in this case, the number of square meters is really not important.
Cicadas and waves
A total of 30 minutes drive from Mali Lošinj, but actually at the very end of the island, in the settlement of Trasorka, this fairytale house is located, standing secluded right by the seashore, surrounded only by wild nature, stone, and olive trees as old as 400 years. Maybe now it’s clearer why we started with those famous lyrics; truly, this house is just that little bit that can give you happiness. About thirty steps separate the house from the crystal blue sea of Lošinj in a quiet bay. Instead of morning coffee, you can simply stretch your legs a bit and start your day with a refreshing swim in the sea, then return for a nice breakfast and spend the rest of the day enjoying the sounds of cicadas competing and the waves crashing against the nearby rocks—all from the terrace, the living room, the kitchen, or even from bed. We think we can freely call this scene a happy one.
We learned that the house was built back in 2009, but the initial building did not suit the owner, Goran Jančić, so after a few years he decided to do a reconstruction, which lasted a year. The final look of the house was completed in May 2021.
- The wish was for the house to blend into the surroundings and look as natural as possible, so the reconstruction was based on natural materials, and the existing traditional environment served as inspiration - says the owner, adding that during the reconstruction process, the room layout in the house was changed and a gallery was added, serving as a sleeping area.
The house consists of a ground floor where there is an open space of the living room, dining room, and kitchen, and the bathroom is also tucked in there. The total area of this space is 40 square meters, and it is complemented by an additional 25 square meters of a wooden gallery where the double bed is located. The entire interior design is minimalist, with only the essentials for life and relaxation. The materials used are wood, concrete, and ceramics.
Without any need for exaggeration, the space includes a couch for relaxing, a dining table with chairs in traditional Dalmatian style, and a small kitchen which also follows that Mediterranean touch in its appearance. The gallery is made of wood, which in its natural look goes perfectly with the ceiling.
Metal-wooden stairs framed with an old-fashioned wrought iron railing lead to the bed itself, and at the very top awaits another treat: on one side of the bed, there is a view of the untouched nature of pines and olives, and on the other, the open sea.
Island experience
- The exterior part of the house was actually much harder to arrange because it was quite a demanding process considering that the house is in wild nature at the end of the island - say the owners, who decided to clad the entire house in stone so as not to disturb the vistas of the area.
We could say the job was done flawlessly, the suit was tailored to the right measurements. The stone used to clad the house was also used to border the area around it, so everything looks like a compact whole that pays tribute to local materials and construction.
Stone House Trasorka is actually just one of the rental properties of the same owner, who also owns another house for rent on Lošinj and Trasorka Glamping, and all the spaces are aimed at providing the best possible experience of this beautiful island.
Formula for happiness
"A bit of sea, a bit of sky," and we‘ll add a bit of stone and olives and agree, without much exaggeration, that in this modest combination the formula for an ideal vacation can really be hidden, where you will surely find at least a little happiness.
