A legendary hotel unveils a lavish redesign fusing Croatian heritage, contemporary art, and sustainable luxury on the coast.

The legendary Villa Dubrovnik, a symbol of exclusivity and elegance on the Croatian coast, has opened its doors after the completion of works aimed at developing a luxury product. The hotel has thus further cemented its position as the most luxurious boutique hotel in Dubrovnik and along the entire Croatian coast.

Inspiration and materials: Dubrovnik spirit meets contemporary design

Perched on a cliff above the Adriatic Sea, Villa Dubrovnik is located in a peaceful, almost isolated micro-location, from which the narrow stone streets of Dubrovnik can be reached in just 15 minutes of pleasant walking.

Green principles are nurtured here and the hotel acts as a driver of healthy, sustainable business in the heart of the City

The renovation of Villa Dubrovnik was carried out by the Brazilian Studio Arthur Casas, whose creative team drew inspiration from Dubrovnik’s heritage and landscape, combining white, sandy, and beige tones of light stone with the warmth of terracotta – in honor of the characteristic Dubrovnik roof tiles. With the intention of conveying the grandeur of Dubrovnik’s golden age to its future guests, the entire creative concept focused on sophistication, luxury, and attention to detail. The design also incorporates dry-stone formations inspired by the original UNESCO-protected ones, and traditional Croatian lace patterns, creating a subtle link between historical heritage and contemporary style. Every detail, from polished wood and handcrafted furniture to local stone masonry, celebrates Croatian craftsmanship, while hand-glazed terracotta brings authentic Mediterranean warmth. This renovation, dedicated to sophistication and attention to the smallest details, irresistibly evokes the grandeur of Dubrovnik’s golden age.

The renovation project included interior design with investment maintenance of the interiors of rooms, restaurants, and common areas, without interfering with the structural elements of the building and without increasing the existing accommodation capacity. This approach has created a unique concept that elegantly meets the expectations of guests from the luxury segment, ensuring Villa Dubrovnik remains long-term positioned as the leading boutique hotel in the region.

Dubrovnik Gardens

Bougainvillea adorning every balcony of Villa Dubrovnik is just one of the striking elements of the "Dubrovnik Gardens" project – a greening initiative that encompassed the entire hotel atrium, roofs, and all outdoor spaces. As part of the project, only indigenous plant species from this area were carefully selected to create an authentic and comprehensive Mediterranean garden experience. In the wealth of colors and scents, every corner of Villa Dubrovnik has become an extension of the natural landscape, deeply rooted in the local heritage.

Croatian artists, surprising collaborations, and timeless designer furniture pieces

Villa Dubrovnik in its new guise opens its doors as a true gallery of contemporary art, where works by local creatives and artists are woven into every space, turning a stay into a creative journey.

Artworks by Dubrovnik artists Dubravka Tulio and Ivana Pegan dominate the lounges and corridors, and together with the sculptures of Ivo Dimnić, bring spaces and walls to life with layers of color and textures inspired by Mediterranean light. On one of the villa’s walls hangs a tapestry by the legendary Jagoda Bui, whispering to guests the story of fabrics and the eternal beauty of handcrafts, while replicas of historical costumes of the local nobility, created by the idea of Duška Nesić, exude the weight of centuries-old tradition and take us back to the golden age of Dubrovnik aristocracy. In all accommodation units and public spaces, stone capitals inspired by old supporting columns with Dubrovnik motifs, interpreted by the artistic studio Ekipa of sculptors, have been installed. Numerous decorative ceramics, imaginatively arranged and integrated, are original works by Studio Pepel.

Every hotel staff member wears authentic Dubrovnik jewelry as a symbol of connection with local history and heritage, while extravagant prints by Croatian fashion designer Juraj Zigman, inspired by the vision of Dubrovnik and the legacy of Villa Dubrovnik, adorn the official uniforms. His original motifs are also applied to unique gifts for guests and visitors, as part of the exclusive "Zigman for Villa Dubrovnik" collaboration.

The interior of Villa Dubrovnik is also adorned with timeless designer pieces. In the rooms and suites, furniture designed by Arthur Casas, made in collaboration with the Croatian company Prostoria, dominates, while the ambiance has been enriched with exclusive designer furniture pieces by Börje Johanson, Claesson Koivisto Rune studio, Eileen Gray, Fratelli Monti, Piero Lissoni, Guido Faleschini, Marcello Ziliani, Patricia Urquiola, Pierre Paulin, Rene Gonzalez, and Vincent Van Duysen, as well as new editions of works by Erberto Carboni (produced by Arflex) and Gio Ponti (including new editions produced by Molteni).

Rooms, suites, residences, and enchanting views

Villa Dubrovnik now offers 56 unique accommodation units – rooms, suites, and residences in various categories, with the most luxurious unique suites named after old Dubrovnik words such as Romantiko Suite, Beleca Suite, Amor Suite, Mirakul Suite, and Tezoro Suite. All units represent a synergy of history and contemporary design and provide panoramic views of the endless blue of the Adriatic and the green island of Lokrum. Guests staying in the hotel’s west wing will also enjoy a unique view of the old city of Dubrovnik.

Combining the cosmopolitan influence of the Venetian Republic and Dubrovnik heritage, the rooms feature iconic pieces of furniture by Gio Ponti – the modernist architect whose minimalist yet refined design of tables and chairs, through a combination of solid wood and golden metal structures, pays homage to one of the most influential figures of the 20th century.

Villa Dubrovnik’s ecological commitment

Villa Dubrovnik is dedicated to nurturing green principles and acts as a driver of healthy, sustainable business in the heart of Dubrovnik. Nature protection and reducing ecological footprint are the hotel’s core values, translated into concrete measures across all aspects of the operation – from operational processes to interactions with guests and the local community. The hotel holds the Green Globe certificate, the most recognized global standard for sustainable travel and tourism, confirming its role among green leaders in the industry.

The story of freedom: a new slogan

Inspired by Gundulić’s verses "Oh beautiful, oh dear, oh sweet freedom", Villa Dubrovnik’s new slogan – "At Liberty to Be _____" – celebrates the deeply rooted value of freedom that has for centuries been the foundation of Dubrovnik’s identity. In the spirit of the legacy of the Dubrovnik Republic, which was among the first in the world to ban slavery, reject foreign rulers, and proudly carried the word "libertas" on its flags, the slogan invites hotel guests to find their own peace and intimacy – free from noise, from view, from the everyday.
