We all love that feeling when the warm spring sun lights up the streets, and the sound of birds chirping can be heard everywhere. That’s the perfect time to relax with something tasty, and is there anything better than a good pizza under the sun?
If you ask us – it’s hard to beat. Pizza is our favorite food to enjoy at a leisurely pace, and a terrace where you can sit in the sun, especially when surrounded by greenery, makes the experience complete. That’s why we’ve made a list of top places in Zagreb that, in our opinion, perfectly combine the two: pizza and sunshine. The criteria are simple – the pizza must be good, and the terrace must be sunlit. Bonus points go for nature, peace, a green setting, and those little urban oases where you forget you’re still in Zagreb...
Pizzeria Park – Martićeva
Located in the city center, Pizzeria Park on Martićeva street is one of those terraces that immediately calls for another glass of wine or a sip of beer with a slice of good pizza. Their pizzas follow the Neapolitan dough style and are always at least solid, if not better. What sets Park apart is the interesting menu concept, where the pizzas are named after Zagreb’s parks and locations, as well as some of Croatia’s most beautiful nature parks.
The terrace is sunny and right next to a small park, and their service is one of their main strengths. You won’t go wrong with any pizza – all we tried were very good.
Papavero – Mlinovi
Papavero may not be in the center, but it’s worth every minute of the drive to Mlinovi. Their spacious terrace is surrounded by greenery and feels almost therapeutic – as if you’re on a short trip out of town, even though you’re still in Zagreb.
What makes Papavero stand out is the dough that belongs to neither the Roman nor Neapolitan pizza style, but has its own airy, crispy, and juicy identity. Their pizza with ‘nduja is finger-licking good – full of flavor, spiced just right. The Margherita with pesto is another safe choice, our favorite pesto pizza in town. Papavero offers pizzas that stay in your memory and make you want to eat them again the very next day. And the rest of their menu is highly recommended!
Karijola – Vlaška
Karijola in Vlaška has a cult status, and for good reason. Their pizza Romana is a pioneer of top-quality pizza in Croatia, and even though the pizza scene in Zagreb has exploded in recent years, Karijola remains at the top.
Their upstairs terrace is a true little oasis – above street level, peaceful, with an occasional bird chirp and a gentle breeze. Our most frequent choice is the pizza with sun-dried tomatoes, but all their veggie pizzas are excellent. Their pizza is thin, crispy, and comes with great ingredients. Karijola has been proving for years that quality doesn’t have to follow trends – they’re consistent, and that’s why we always love coming back.
Basta – Varšavska
Basta on Varšavska hides one of the most pleasant terraces in the city center, ideal for late afternoon or evening gatherings over pizza. Although the pizza at their Jarun location didn’t impress us last time, Varšavska still maintains its standard.
Their Neapolitan pizzas are good, but what personally excites us even more are their sandwiches – especially the panugnitelli with smoked ham and sun-dried tomatoes. The terrace is sheltered from the city hustle, and it’s perfect if you’re looking for a place where you can talk without shouting, enjoy the view, and have something tasty to eat.
Duksa – Bundek
Duksa, like the aforementioned Karijola, is among the pioneers of good pizza in Zagreb, and although most people still travel to the original location near Maksimir, we recommend you try the one at Bundek as well. Why? Because the terrace in the garden next to Bundek park offers peace, greenery, and the ideal atmosphere for enjoying crispy pizzas.
Here, according to many, the best Roman-style pizzas in town are baked. “Lajkam Pancetu”, “Kad Jaganjci ne utihnu”, and “Koza Nostra” are our favorites, but actually – it’s hard to go wrong with whatever you choose. We’ve eaten almost everything from their menu and have never been disappointed.
Of course, Zagreb hides many more good pizzerias with sun-drenched terraces, each with its own charm and story. After all, wherever you decide to go from this list, one thing is certain – on a sunny day you can’t go wrong.
