From rooftop coffee to irresistible pies and French bistro fare, these stops will transform your next stroll through the city.

Martićeva is one of the more interesting gastronomic streets in Zagreb, and we also have a few favorites in Vlaška that we like to return to, and recently, good and noteworthy places have started opening along the route from Kvaternik Square and market all the way to Maksimir Park. We couldn‘t be happier about it. That‘s why we‘ve created a guide with addresses where you can stop by if you‘re in this part of the city looking for good coffee, pies, want to sit down for a good breakfast, lunch or dinner, or are looking for a place with desserts that won‘t disappoint you. Our list awaits you below.

WHERE FOR COFFEE AND BREAKFAST?

If you‘re heading towards Maksimir from Kvaternik Market, after stocking up on fruit, vegetables, cheese, fish and meat and you need a break with a cup of good coffee, we have more than a good suggestion for you. On the fourth floor of the building at Zagreb‘s Kvaternik Market, you will find a small roastery Four Wheel Coffee Roasters. The owner of this place, also the barista and head roaster, Karlo Purić, has been roasting various types of Arabica coffee since 2018, which he gets from Colombia, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and similar distant places, and a special feature of this place is the beautiful view of Zagreb‘s rooftops from the terrace.

When you head from Kvaternik towards Maksimir, another place where you can sit for coffee, breakfast, or brunch, just a few steps from Kvaternik Square, is Urania bar. When we recently visited, we had a good, filling breakfast, drank excellent coffee and matcha latte, and in addition, they offer homemade kombucha and, in the afternoon, cocktails.

Although not directly on Maksimirska, just a few minutes‘ walk from Kvaternik Square, you can also reach the recently opened 201 Studio by Ivana Bekavac. We have also written about this place several times, and stopped by for brunch and were pleasantly surprised by the food, drinks, and pleasant atmosphere. Here you will find vegan and vegetarian dishes, prepared in an imaginative way, so if you want to try something new and different, and at the same time go home with a jar of jam or preserves and a bouquet in hand, this is a place that will not disappoint you.

On Petrova Street, a bit further from Kvaternik Square, but still close enough to walk, there is also Drugi Program, a truly special cafe where we love to stop for a cup of good tea and a slice of juicy cake and enjoy the beautifully decorated space and atmosphere. This place is also a good option if you like to answer some emails with your coffee.

WHERE FOR A TASTY PIE?

The small pie shop Anine pite, located at Maksimirska 100, is one of our favorite places on this route. Here we once bought several varieties of pies and liked the one with beef and potatoes the most, which is generously filled, just right seasoned (not for those who like to overdo it with pepper) and light. Slightly crispy on the outside, not too greasy, and when we bought it, it was still warm so we couldn‘t resist and ate more than half on the spot, even before lunch. The spinach, potato, and cheese pies were also juicy, light and well seasoned, and the apple strudel was juicy. So, this place gets a warm recommendation from us.

Besides Anine pite, of course, you can also eat excellent pies and burek at Kvaternik Market. It‘s hard to pick a favorite here because everyone makes them in their own special way, so whichever you choose, you can‘t go too wrong.

WHERE FOR LUNCH?

Around Kvaternik Market, you can stop for a good snack at Kod Šime. Here they serve delicious fish and meat dishes, among which we highlight the veal roast, calamari, and špek tripe. Portions are filling, and prices are standard for today‘s times.

Right about where we set the boundary for restaurants and cafes on the route from Kvaternik to Maksimir, there is also Ježeva kućica. Our list, in fact, wouldn‘t be complete without this restaurant, because here we might eat the best roasts in town. Their duck with mlinci and veal are dishes we never miss after a weekend walk through Maksimir, and they also offer excellent soups and stuffed cabbage.

Just before Maksimir Park, at Maksimirska 96, there is the newly opened Bistro 96, one of the few restaurants in Zagreb where you can eat French classics. On the menu, among other things, are baked onion soup (which is excellent), poulet au vin, and creme brûlée, and if you stop by on Thursdays, you can also enjoy frog stew.

If you find yourself near Maksimir and are in the mood for pizza, maybe Duksa pizzeria in Dukanovićeva could be a good option. The pizza at Duksa is thin, crispy, and the toppings are imaginative and varied, so we believe everyone will find something for themselves here.

AND SOMETHING SWEET?

One of the sweet spots on this route, located roughly halfway, is Orijent, where currently, as part of their Retro counter, they offer several somewhat forgotten classics.

Additionally, on the route from Kvaternik to Maksimir, there is also Let Them Eat Cake, the patisserie of Ivana Čuljak, where you can also stop for a dessert, coffee, or juice, and at this time of year, for donuts filled with various creams.

WHERE FOR A SPECIAL SHOPPING?

Recently, we quite accidentally came across a shop with Italian delicacies Gastronomica Buono while walking down Maksimirska. Here you can find various cheeses, cured meats, sauces, pastas, cookies, and spreads from well-known Italian producers. For example, we bought good mortadella and almond cookies here. Find more information on the official website.
